"Spreading the Good News of roller derby" was Sammi lones's main goal in writing Derby Girl. She has competed in all kinds of sports⁠—golf, tennis, basketball, and more⁠—but she never came across any sport quite like roller derby. Jones describes women's derby as the most difficult sport she's ever played, but also the most rewarding. Jones got her start in roller derby in 2010 when she joined the Fargo Moorhead Derby Girls, She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Minnesota State University Moorhead and has written for a variety of publications., She resides in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area where she works as an assistant editor for a trade magazine and skates for Minneapolis's North Star Roller Girls.
