Howard Lamar is one of America's most important Western historians. Born in Tuskegee, Ala., in 1923, he received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1951. He has been at Yale since, serving in a number of teaching and administrative roles, including president of the university in 1992-93. He has written and edited a number of books and articles on Western history. Since 1994 he has been Sterling Professor of History Emeritus at Yale.
